Die 4. Etappe der Dakar führte von San Salvador de Jujuy nach Calama. Dabei ging es auf das Dach der Rallye es ging über die Kordillen, die bis zu 4800 m in die Höhe ragen. 207 Wertungskilometer waren von allen zu absolvieren. Heute waren die Fahrzeuge nochmal auf steinigem Untergrund unterwegs. Die Atacamawüste ist aber nicht mehr weit.
Bei den Autos holte sich Carlos Sainz seinen 20. Dakarsieg und baute seine Führung auf Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah um weitere 50 Sekunden aus. Der Katarer hat nun schon 4:24 min Rückstand. Stephane Peterhansel bleibt Dritter. In der Gesamtwertung folgt er mit 5:41 min Abstand auf Sainz. Der Rest ist schon weit entfernt. Bester Deutscher bleibt Matthias Kahle. Nach der gestrigen enttäuschenden Platzierung kam er heute als 16. ins Ziel und verbesserte sich in der Gesamtwertung auf Platz 18. Stephan Schott bot ebenfalls eine gute Leistung und verbesserte sich auf Platz 27.
Bereits ausgeschieden ist der Vierte der Dakar 2009, Robby Gordon, der mit einem schweren Motorschaden seines HUMMER liegen blieb.
Bei den Motorrädern gab es ein spannendes Rennen Marc Coma gewann den sportlichen Teil mit 16 Sekunden vor dem führenden Cyril Despres. Der Franzose bekam später eine 10-Minuten-Zeitstrafe und hat damit einen herben Rückschlag für seine Titelambitionen bekommen. So war am heutigen Tag der Chilene Francisco Lopez Contardo der zweitbeste. In der Gesamtwertung rückte der Aprilia-Pilot mit 20 Minuten Rückstand auf Platz 3.
Unter den deutschen Fahrern bleibt Daniel Schröder der Beste. Er verbesserte sich um eine Position auf Platz 57. Jan Vesely ist weiter auf dem Vormarsch und liegt nun schon auf Platz 85. Für Christina Meier rückt langsam Platz 100 in erreichbare Nähe. Die Hamburgerin liegt mit gut 6 Stunden Rückstand auf Coma nun auf Rang 105.
Bei den Quads gab es erneut einen Führungswechsel. Tomas Maffei kam zu seinem zweiten Etappensieg und übernahm auch die Spitze im Gesamtklassement. Sebastian Halpern verlor gleich mehr als 4 Minuten und fiel noch hinter Alejandro Patronelli zurück. In der Gesamtwertung gibt es nun einen klaren Dreikampf. Zwischen Tomas Maffei und Sebastian Halpern liegen nur 3:11 min.
Bei den Trucks gab es keine Majestätsbeleidigung. Geburtstagskind Wladimir Schagin machte sich das beste Geschenk gleich selbst und nahm Firdaus Kabirow weitere weiter 2:18 min ab. Schagins Vorsprung in der Gesamtwertung beträgt schon 8:41 min. Der einzige, der den beiden KAMAZ einigermaßen folgen kann, ist der TATRA von Ales Loprais. Der Tscheche hat gut 12,5 Minuten Rückstand. Weiter gut unterwegs ist Franz Echter, der mit gut 46 Minuten Rückstand auf Platz 4 liegt. Mattihas Behringer wurde heute Tages-Zehnter, in der Gesamtwertung fehlen ihm noch 14 Minuten bis zum Spruch in die Top 10. Dieter Depping verbesserte sich auf Platz 11
Ein bisschen Boden verloren hat heute Gerhard Walcher. Der MErcedes-Pilot verlor heute gleich 1:42 Std. und fiel auf Platz 36 zurück. Letzte der 54 noch im Rennen verbliebenen ist Andrea Mayer. Aber immerhin: Sie ist noch dabei.
