Dass die Red Bull gut in Form sind, das konnte man vermuten. Aber dass Sebastian Vettel beim ersten Qualifying die Konkurrenz dermaßen in Grund und Boden fahren würde, das überraschte dann sogar den Champion selbst. Fast 8 Zehntel Sekunden Vorsprung auf den Zweiten hatte der Heppenheimer, der in einer anderen Liga zu fahren scheint.
Bester vom Rest wurde Ex-Champion Lewis Hamilton mit seinem McLaren-Mercedes. Auch die gute Verfassung des McLaren-Teams ist durchaus überraschend. Einige hatten den Briten einen etwas holprigeren Start vorausgesagt. Hinter Mark Webber (Red Bull-Renault) kam mit Jenson Button der zweite McLaren-Pilot auf Platz 4.
Gut 1,5 Sekunden auf den Pole-Mann verlor der beste Ferrari-Fahrer, Fernando Alonso, und startet in der kommenden Nacht nur von Platz 5. Hinter Vitaly Petrov (Renault) landete Nico Rosberg als bester Mercedes-Pilot auf Platz 7. Michael Schumacher scheiterte bereits in Q2 und startet nur von Platz 11. Eine große Enttäuschung für den Rekordweltmeister und seinen Rennstall. Die anderen Deutschen starten am Ende des Feldes: Adrian Sutil verlor das Force India-Duell mit Paul di Resta und wurde 14., Nick Heidfeld wurde im zweiten Renault nur 16. Timo Glock gewann immerhin das Virgin-interne Duell gegen Jerome d´Ambrosio und wurde Vorletzter (21.).
Ach so, hinter den Virgin-Cosworth kamen noch die HRT(Hispania)-Cosworth ins Ziel. Die waren aber so deutlich langsamer als Sebastian Vettel, dass sie aufgrund der 107 %-Regel für das Rennen disqualifiziert wurden.
