Der schnellste auf der 17. Etappe von Feltre nach Tirano (230 km) war am Ende nicht der Sieger. Beim Spurt aus einer Ausreißergruppe war Farnese-Profi Giovanni Visconti der schnellste, soll aber gegen Landsmann Diego Ulissi die Arme zu stark eingesetzt haben und wurde so auf Platz 3 gesetzt. Der erst 21-jährige Fahrer vom Team Lampre kam so zu seinem ersten Giro-Etappensieg. Zweiter wurde Pablo Lastras (E). 2:59 nach den Siegern kam Sebastian Lang in der ersten großen Verfolgergruppe als 16. über das Ziel.
In der Gesamtwertung bleibt Alberto Contador klar vorn. Der Spanier führt mit 4:58 min vor Michaele Scarponi.
