In der mit Spannung erwarteten Rede des amtierenden Generalsekretärs schlug der 75-jährige Schweizer dem Kongress vor, die Vergabe der Weltmeisterschaft in Zukunft nicht mehr durch den 24-köpfigen Exekutivrat, sondern durch den Kongress beschließen zu lassen. Dem Exekutivrat wurde besonders in Verbindung mit der Vergabe der WM 2022 nach Katar persönliche Vorteilsnahme vorgeworfen.
Es wäre auf jeden Fall der Weg in die richtige Richtung. Die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft ist eine der größten Sportveranstaltungen der Welt. Es ist ziemlich absurd, dass 24 meist ältere Herren darüber entscheiden, wo die Welt sich zu treffen hat, um das Fest feiern. Das da immer mehr ökonomische Fragen eine Rolle spielen, ist sowieso klar - muss auch so sein. Wie gefährlich eine Vergabe an ökonomisch und logistisch nicht so leistungsstarke Länder ist, kann man gerade bei der Vorbereitung der Europameisterschaft in Polen und der Ukraine besichtigen.
Katar ist sicherlich eine überraschende Wahl gewesen. Andererseits hat die Idee, den Fußball überall in die Welt zu tragen durchaus Charme. Dagegen spricht definitiv das Klima und die Infrastruktur des Landes. Wofür bitteschön benötigt ein kleines Scheichtum wie Katar mehrere Groß-Arenen? Man braucht sie nicht, weshalb Sie ja nach der WM auch wieder abgerissen und Entwicklungsländern geschenkt werden. Klingt gut, ist es aber eigentlich nicht. Denn mit Nachhaltigkeit hat das nichts zu tun. Denn die Ressourcenverschwendung ist trotzdem immens: Jede Arena muss zweimal aufgebaut und zwischendurch abgerissen oder zerlegt werden. Dazu kommt der Transport. Was für eine Energieverschwendung! Unter diesem Aspekt wäre England definitiv die bessere Wahl gewesen. England ist bestimmt nicht arm, aber gegen die Petrol-Dollars des Katar ist nicht anzukommen. Auch wenn das OK Katars behauptet nicht geschmiert zu haben, Zwefel bleiben und fallen auf einen von jeher eher wenig transparenten Fußball-Weltverband.
