Der langjährige Trainer der italienischen Fußball-Nationalmannschaft, Enzo Bearzot, ist am 21. Dezember im Alter von 83 Jahren in Mailand verstorben.
Mit ihm verliert Italien eine der größten Fußball-Legenden des Landes. Bearzot stammt aus dem Friaul. Als Fußballer spielte er unter anderem für den AC Turin und Inter Mailand. 1955 absolvierte Enzo Bearzot sein einziges Länderspiel für die Squadra Azzurra. Nach dem Ende seiner Spielerkarriere wurde er Trainer. Nach Jobs als Torwart- und Assistenztrainer bei Juventus Turin ging er nach Ende der 60er Jahre zum italienischen Fußball-Verband. Hier trainerte Bearzot die U23-Mannschaft und nahm als Assistent von Ferrusccio Valvareggi an den Weltmeisterschaften 1970 und 1974 teil. Nach dem Aus in der Vorrunde und einem erfolglosen Jahr unter Fulvio Bernardini übernahm Enzo Bearzot 1975 die Nationalmannschaft. Nach Platz 4 bei der WM 1978 in Argentinien gelang dem "Schweiger aus dem Friaul" 1982 das Meisterstück. In Spanien wurde er mit Italien Weltmeister. 1986 schied seine Mannschaft bereits im Achtelfinale aus und Bearzot trat als Nationaltrainer zurück. Mit 104 Spielen als Trainer der italienischen Nationalmannschaft ist er zu einer Legende im Italien geworden. Er war der erfolgreichste Übungsleiter nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg. Enzo Bearzot betreute die Nationalmannschaft so oft wie kein anderer.
Erfolgreicher war nur der Doppelweltmeister (1934, 1938) Vittorio Pozzo.
